Dee’s Story
Owner and Master Chef of My Thai Asian Cuisine
A Thai native, Dee Benson was inspired through simply observing her mother and street vendors cook. As she prepares dishes such as bamboo chicken, pad thai, radd na, and nam tok, she can still recall their cooking techniques. She has adapted her cooking style to fit her taste preferences and to use ingredients more readily available in the United States.
Dee has been working in food services for over 45 years. When she first came to the United States in 1973, she began her culinary journey at IHOP. She attended college and earned a degree in Hotel and Restaurant management. As a student at BYU Hawaii, she worked in the cafeteria and worked her way up to catering director, where she was responsible for catering for 700-1000 people at a time. Dee lived overseas in Saudi Arabia for 11 years, but her cooking never stopped. She had opportunities to cater for the US Consulate and other parties and groups—and her specialty that everyone raved about were her fried spring rolls.
Here in Utah, she worked for Salt Lake County as a manager and supplied meals through Meals on Wheels. Dee’s talent, experience, and passion and her desire to please her customers has made My Thai successful.
